The village of Schenna (Scena in Italian) is set in prime location on a sunny plateau (600 m) above the town of Meran. Its Mediterranean climate, the panoramic view over the valley and the surrounding alpine peaks and its luxuriant vegetation are its distinctive traits.
Schenna is a beloved hiking destination: from your holiday apartments, you can reach on foot, by bus or with the modern cableways a wide range of pathways from the mostly level walks of the “Waalwege”, to more difficult routes to alpine pastures and peaks. The village of Schenna itself, with its lovely shops and picturesque town center is worth a visit. Different footpaths or the public busses connect Schenna to the renowned spa town of Meran.
The public outdoor pool impresses visitors with its modern architecture and its breathtaking panoramic view of Meran and the surrounding mountains. The complex offers a pool with water slide, children’s pool, whirlpool, large lawn area, 4 bowling alleys, 2 tennis courts and a restaurant with sun terrace.
Built around 1350, during the time of Margarethe Maultasch, and still in the possession of notable members of the Tyrolean aristocracy, it is to Archduke John of Austria in particular that Schenna Castle owes its current prominence among the castles of South Tyrol. The museum with paintings, objects from everyday life from the past centuries and the weapon collection tells the history of Tyrol in a palpable way. All this with a magnificent view of Meran with its wonderful surroundings.

The mausoleum is set in the center of Schenna just behind the main church. It was built between 1860 and 1870 as a burial place for Archduke Johann of Austria and his family. The building was constructed of red sandstone and granite from the Ifinger region.

Already the Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sissi) used to walk in this splendid park and chose Trauttmansdorff Castle as her preferred winter residence. The botanical Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle count amidst the most beautiful gardens in the world.
